Normandy : it all starts in the Eure !

L'Eure en Normandie

Normandy, its picture postcards of cows and half-timbered houses, its coastline, its countryside, its gardens, its generous gastronomy ... Of course, none of that is news to you.
But what about the Eure?
Take a closer look ... You will find below the "manifesto" of a marvellous bit of Normandy!

From Paris, the first taste of Normandy is just an hour away, in the Eure

Our Eure is a concentrate of all that is Normandy: a protected nature, a string of half-timbered villages, a green countryside decked with orchards, the taste of good living, its landscape parcelled up by hedge-lined sunken roads, its forests, its rivers, its valleys, an exceptionally fine heritage of centuries-old abbeys, medieval castles

Travelling from Paris :

The first apple and its apple tree
The first sip of cider
The first Normandy cow and its meadow
The first Thatched Cottage road and its half-timbered houses

All just one hour away in the Eure

Guaranteed wonder and enchantment deep in a unique part of Normandy !

Yes, our Eure is proud of being part of Normandy. But it is a very special part. So many things start here in the Eure. Come on in – the door's open !

Innovative and creative

The Eure is inspirational, breaking radically with the image of a Normandy focused solely on the past. It attracts painters, filmmakers, writers ...

The Eure is dynamic, offering some surprising holiday opportunities: a weekend in in self-catering accommodation surrounded by exceptional gardens; visits to the gardens of Hell or Paradise at Miserey or the New Museum of Impressionism in Giverny, a unique site near the gardens of Monet...

The Eure is creative, and has always been good at marrying tradition with innovation. Testimony to this is provided by the growing of flax, an ecological and durable material, of which our département is Europe's second biggest producer.

Infinitely hospitable

Local culture there is friendly and populist in the best sense of the word.

So what you get is not big crowds, but rather a taste for dialogue, contact and sharing with others, cultivated around the pretexts provided by many and varied festivities: rambling at dusk, fly-fishing sessions, markets, the Eure d'Eté festival, open-air opera, Nettle Days, and much more.

The inhabitants of the Eure know the meaning of hospitality and they like to help their guests discover their region and its great quality of life.

But also...

...Deeply natural

A couple of stone throws from Paris, the Eure is overflowing with « pure nature », decked out with every possible shade of green: the luminous green of its rivers, the English green of its golf courses, the soft green of its flax, the succulent green of its pastureland ... Add to that its luxuriant valleys, its impressionist light play, its constantly changing skies, its bright, pretty gardens, the omnipresence of water, its miles of forestland ... And this little corner of Eden that is ours is not far away at all

...Keen to protect its environment

In the Eure, the human population and the natural environment live together in solidarity. Browsing Scottish cows tidy up marshland we wish to restore, sheep go so far as to come into town to keep parks in trim, human beings highlight the value of sensitive nature areas that are often home to rare and exceptional species.

Wild orchids, European white storks, peregrine falcons, New Forest cicadas ... find ready shelter in this protected landscape, and in return provide ramblers with marvellous encounters with flora and fauna.

...In love with simple pleasures

Unexciting, walks in the forest when the leaves crackle underfoot, cycle trips on country roads, time spent reading a good book on the river bank, springtime country picnics?

To each his or her taste, but for those of us who live in the Eure the simplicity, the pleasure of the little things, the desire to savour life as it is lived are second nature.

...Diversity, par excellence

Coming from Paris, you enter Normandy via the Eure, which has a little of all Normandy's different aspects.
The castles that embody the saga of Normandy's rich historical tapestry? A string of gardens unique in France, such as those of Gisacum? The Eure has them.

A collection of harmonious landscapes ranging from the majesty of the Seine Valley to the most beautiful of Europe's beech woods? Exciting watermills, trees listed for heritage protection, sundials... ? A palette of personal discoveries and holidays for all at every price? It has that too.

We in the Eure, in all modesty, can lay claim to the idea that great pleasure is to be found precisely in this diversity.

Enjoy a astonishing diversity of discoveries and leisure activities

A region that is a melting pot with a rich wealth of possibilities, the Eure surprise you
with the incredible diversity of the tours and activities it offers: villages full of character, castles, archaeological sites, religious edifices, fine arts museums and museums of local expertise, local produce, food and flea markets, gardens, bird sanctuaries, tourist trains, historical and tourist routes, canoe excursions, fishing on rivers and lakes, every form of rambling, nature discovery and interpretation trails, golf courses, aerial sports, and much, much more.
