It flows through the heart of Nevers and then on to the charming town of La Charité-Sur-Loire. From there, it flows through plains and past the forêt des Bertranges in the distance. It then winds between mountains and hills to the west bank, and Cosnes-Sur-Loire and La Charité-Sur-Loire on the east bank. The Loire is the eternal life-source of Nièvre.
A feat of engineering, the preserved Canal du Nivernais nevertheless has a wild character. It stretches over 180km through the heart of the forest from bridges to locks, passing ponds and villages on the way. Welcome to a hidden world where the living is easy.
In this 174 000 hectare granite massif, walks criss-cross and no two are the same. Forest paths meet rivers at the edge of clearings and sometimes border vast undulating plains. Lovers of white-water sports can put themselves to the test over the rapids of the cure or Chalaux rivers, while the calmer waters of lakes welcome sailboards and canoes.
