Seine et Marne, with its many different faces, lies close to Paris yet seems a world away... The region boasts a rich history and a wonderful variety of landscapes which have inspired some of the greatest Impressionist painters and landscape artists. Today, you can still find talented contemporary painters and Sunday painters immortalising on canvas scenes of the Marne, Seine and Loing banks and the region's beautiful meadows, forests, churches, châteaux and villages.
One thing is sure... you'll never be bored in Seine et Marne. Both adults and children can enjoy the thrills of Disneyland, the fascinating Histoire de France at Champs sur Marne, the châteaux of Vaux-le-Vicomte, Fontainebleau, Guermantes, Ferrières, Jouarre, Blandy-les-Tours and the medieval marvels of Provins.
In December 2001, the “Medieval Fair Townî of Provins was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is the fourth site in the Ile de France region to be given this prestigious mark of recognition (for its urban features), after the National Palaces of Versailles, Fontainebleau and the banks of the Seine at the foot of Notre Dame cathedral.
From north to south and east to west, the largest department in the Ile de France region (half its surface area, or around 600 000 hectares), offers visitors rest and relaxation, delicious local produce and specialities and a very warm welcome.
Enjoy your discovery of Seine et Marne!
