From the Montagne Noire, the southern tip of the Massif Central, to the wide, tranquil plains of the Agout and Tarn rivers, and from the rugged unspoilt Ségala region to the rounded hills of the Vaurais, gateway to the sprawling plains of the Lauragais, the Tarn offers an enormous diversity of landscapes.
Numerous testimonies of the past point to the great periods of French history, from gallo-romanic times to the French Revolution via the Middle Ages – for which the old city of Cordes is one of the jewels in the crown – finally leading to the industrial era with, amongst others, the Museum of Mining at Carmaux.
We are reminded of outstanding people with a glorious past who were born in the area: seafarers such as Rochegude and Lapérouse, the humanist Jean Jaurès, and the painter Toulouse Lautrec.
Over 2800 kms of marked trails allow you to discover the area of the Tarn on foot, by bicycle, or on horseback. Numerous open spaces such as parks, gardens, nature reserves, forests and lakes invite the visitor.
From fairs and flea markets (including at night time) to village fêtes... summer boasts a multitude of activities.
If Tarnaise gastronomy tempts your palate you should not miss sampling dishes such as radis au foie salé (tepid sliced radishes with chopped liver), tripe à l'albigeoise, duck in all its forms, croustades “al cabessal(typical apple pies with pastry crusts).
