About this Holiday rental

The Gîte de la vache acajou owes its name to one of the emblems of Cantal: the Salers cow. This cow is recognizable by its long pair of lyre-shaped horns and its mahogany-colored dress. During your stay, you will certainly see them in the meadows or in the mountain pastures.

Between Salers and Mauriac, at the gates of the Auvergne Volcanoes Regional Nature Park, the landscapes are magnificent and the outdoor and leisure activities are numerous. The destination is ideal for recharging your batteries and enjoying a preserved living environment.

  • An old barn converted into a gîte in Drugeac
The Gîte de la vache acajou occupies an old barn in the hamlet of Champs, in the town of Drugeac. It belongs to an agricultural company whose owners breed - you guessed it - Salers cows!

The transformation of the barn into a comfortable gîte has given a modern soul to this old building, while respecting its original architecture. Carefully renovated, this cottage combines comfort and practicality and is ideal for family reunions or holidays with friends.

This large 195 m2 gîte is spread over 2 levels and can accommodate 8 people.
As soon as you arrive, you will be seduced by the spacious living room on the ground floor. The wooden windows, the exposed stone walls and the cantou (large traditional fireplace) bring a lot of charm and authenticity.

A large farmhouse table for having meals together, a cozy sofa for resting, a wood stove for gathering around the warmth of the fire: everything has been thought out for your well-being and comfort. In addition, the cottage has a TV and a wi-fi connection.

The large, convivial kitchen is fully equipped: hotplates, oven, refrigerator, freezer, microwave oven, dishwasher, etc. Nothing is missing. A wooden counter brings a functional and warm touch to the room.

The 4 bedrooms invite you to rest. Each has its own color and mood. The pink bedroom, located on the ground floor, has a double bed, a private shower room and a toilet.

Upstairs, you will find a play area-reading corner on the landing and 3 attic bedrooms. The gray and blue rooms have a double bed and share a bathroom with toilet. The green room has a double bed, a private bathroom and toilet. Sheets and household linen are provided, as well as a baby kit (on request).

In fine weather, you can dine on the terrace facing the beautiful mountains of Cantal. In the fenced garden, children can play and have fun around the swing!

Pets are not allowed.

  • Nature, heritage and gastronomy: authentic holidays in Cantal

The village of Drugeac is located in the heart of the Cantal volcano, not far from the gorges of the Auze river. Departing from Drugeac station, very close to the gîte de la vache acajou, you can ride a Vélorail.

You will follow a course, punctuated by 3 tunnels and 3 viaducts, of more than 7 km round trip to the Salins waterfall. The Vélorail du Pays de Mauriac is a fun activity accessible to all. It allows you to discover the railway heritage of the Auvergnats line in Paris in an original way.

The Salins waterfall is located 7 km from your vacation rental. You can get there by rail bike but also on foot via a trail. With its 30-meter waterfall, it offers a beautiful spectacle in a setting of rocks and forests. You can extend the walk by passing behind the waterfall and going to the village of Salins.
After your visit to Salins, you can stop off at Mauriac. The city, labeled Most beautiful detours in France, has a beautiful heritage: fountains, old fortifications, the basilica of Notre-Dame-des-Miracles
or the Saint-Pierre monastery. In addition, it has many shops and services.

The Maison de la Salers, in the town of Saint-Bonnet-de-Salers, 7 km from your vacation rental, offers an interactive space dedicated to the Salers cattle breed. In a typical Auvergne barn, you will dive into the world of Salers and taste products from its breeding (charcuterie, cheese, meat). A shop offers tasty local products.

To complete your trip to Saint-Bonnet-de-Salers, stop by the dairy cooperative. From the production of milk on the farms to the ripening of the cheese, at the end of the visit, you will be unbeatable on the production of Cantal AOP! On site, a tasting of the cooperative's products is offered.

Salers owes its fame both to its built heritage and to the riches of its terroir. Take the time to stroll through the narrow streets of the town, listed as one of the Most Beautiful Villages in France, and settle down in one of the many restaurants to taste Salers AOP (cheese), Salers meat, a square of Salers (shortbread biscuit) and a glass of Salers (aperitif made with Gentian).

From the Barrouze esplanade, the view of the Puy Violent and the Cantal mountains is superb: you won't be able to resist the call of wide open spaces! Puy Mary, 30 minutes away, is one of the most famous peaks of the Cantal massif. You can climb it from the Pas de Peyrol pass. At 1,783 meters above sea level, the panorama is breathtaking.

If you are a fan of hiking and beautiful landscapes, the territory of the Grand Site de France Puy Mary – Volcan du Cantal has 34 short hiking trails (PR) and 2 GR®! Many mountain bike routes also allow you to explore the Cantal volcano.

Less sporty, La promenade des estives is a path located in the town of Anglards-de-Salers, 11 km from your gîte. The route is lined with panels that tell the story of the burons. The entire hike stretches over 12 km. You can also stop halfway, an orientation table gives you a 360° view of the Cantal mountains, the Sancy mountains and even the Limousin highlands.

The built heritage in Anglards-de-Salers is rich and varied. From small rural heritage (ovens, washhouses, wells, wayside crosses, etc.) to listed heritage (churches, Château de la Trémolière), you will be amazed!

In the green setting of the Maronne valley, a visit to the village of Saint-Martin-Valmeroux will be a pleasant stopover: 14th century church, houses with turrets, grain hall with three measures, castles of St-Pôl and Vezou... The clear waters of the fountain, rich in iron bicarbonate and carbonic acid, give it healing properties.
