The city of Arles has a double inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage list, for the cultural property "Arles, Roman monuments and novels" and for the cultural property in series "Paths of Santiago de Compostela en France ".
The eight monuments inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List:
- The Roman Amphitheater
Built at the end of the first century, the amphitheater (136m x 107m) could accommodate about 21,000 spectators (against 12,500 currently), who attended games and fights. Today, there are bullfighting shows
are regularly given, hence its name also arenas.
- The Ancient Theater
Preceding for a century its illustrious neighbor the amphitheater, the Roman theater of Arles, is built in the heart of the ancient city. It has now returned to its original function and offers various shows in season.
- Saint-Trophime church and its cloister
The cloister adjoins the church of the same name. The first two Romanesque galleries date from the twelfth century, to which were added in the fourteenth century two other galleries of Gothic style. The sculptures, recently restored,
are of exceptional quality.
- The cryptoportiques (and vestiges of the forum)
Like all Roman cities, Arelate had a vast forum today disappeared. Today we can go down and circulate in these underground galleries.
- The Baths of Constantine
Public places of the most frequented, the baths are essential to the comfort of the urban life of the Roman time. Partially cleared, the baths of Constantine date from the beginning of the IVth century.
- The Roman ramparts
The city has been surrounded by ramparts since Roman times. Various remains are visible along the boulevards.
- The Alyscamps website
From the immense Roman and medieval necropolis, there remains a romantic site composed of a Romanesque church, chapels and a path of sarcophagi arranged in the eighteenth century by the minimal brothers.
FROM THE SAINTES-MARIES-DE-LA-MER TO ARLES
Leisure and Crafts - All year
The heritage of Camargue is rich in preserved natural areas, historical sites and typical local culture. By connecting the Saintes-Maries to Arles, different stops are possible, such as the ornithological park of the Pont de Gau, the House of the Regional Natural Park of Camargue or the castle of Avignon, all the more interesting as it reconciles the arts and architecture. Nature is everywhere, spreading its rice fields and ponds, while in places emerge mas and huts of gardians (houses with whitewashed walls and lined with reeds) lurking at the end of a path. A stop at a small restaurant in the area will be the opportunity to taste the guardian bull. And the discovery of Arles will perhaps lead you to the Museum of Ancient Arles, located on the banks of the Rhone.
