A little history:
At the foothills of the Couserans, The City of Art and History of Saint-Lizier is a living memory of the great era of Compostela pilgrimage and a stage of 'Paths of Piedmont' (GR78). As such its main monuments are listed as UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is also part of the great sites of Midi-Pyrénées Ariège collection.
Ancient Gallo-Roman site, and bishopric of Couserans, the City of Saint-Lizier has many monuments testifying to its rich past.
The Gallo-Roman ramparts encircle the top of the city and are still visible on 740m.
The Cathedral of Saint-Lizier, built in the 11th century contains in its apse, one of the most beautiful set of Pyrenean Romanesque frescoes. In the northern apse, a set of the same time illustrates the Heavenly Jerusalem.
The Romanesque cloister and its famous gallery artists transports you to the era of the Middle Ages, and invites you to serenity ... and of course we will not forget the famous eighteenth century pharmacy
