Besançon is the prefecture of the department of Doubs and the seat of the region Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. This large town is just a few kilometres from the Massif du Jura and the Swiss border. Courbet, the pre-impressionist French artist, was born in this charming village in Doubs. He produced many paintings in the neighbourhood. His house is now a museum containing many of the artist's works. In Arc-et-Senans and Salins-les-Bains, you can discover the saltworks. Both have been listed as UNESCO World Heritage sites.
