Languedoc-Roussillon: a dynamic coastline and a remarkable historical heritage

Languedoc-Roussillon attracts travellers from all over the world for its formidable natural and historical heritage. Its wide sandy beaches offer both relaxation and entertainment through a wide range of activities. The region is also home to some major monuments, in particular castles dating back to medieval times.

Seaside resorts and rich terroirs in Languedoc-Roussilon

Surrounded by 5 départements including Hérault and Pyrénées-Orientales, Aude boasts a wide variety of landscapes. You'll wander through scrubland and maquis, but you'll also see large oak forests and lagoons just a few dozen kilometres away! Its historic heritage is particularly concentrated in Carcassonne. You won't fail to be impressed by its castle and its rich cuisine. Impossible to miss the cassoulet, but don't forget a good walk to aid digestion!

You'll easily find quality accommodation in the city centre of Nîmes or in the Gard hinterland. This department is just as much appreciated for its environmental heritage as for its generous gastronomy. The prefecture of Nîmes has the greatest appeal, with the Jardin de la Fontaine and the famous arena! A variety of delicious dishes are prepared here, including brandade and fougasse with fritons. Other iconic sites to visit include the Pont du Gard and the ramparts of Aigues-Mortes.

There are plenty of tourist attractions in the Herault region, guaranteeing you a holiday with a change of scenery! The Navacelles cirque and the summit of Pic Saint Loup offer breathtaking views. To go out in the evening, head to Place de la Comédie in Montpellier, a place dotted with restaurants and bars that are always very popular. Give in to the temptation of two iconic local confectioneries, the marshmallow and the grisette! This is also the town where you can admire animal species at the Henri de Lunaret zoological park, which has the advantage of being free. If holidays are synonymous with idleness, the seaside resorts of Agde and Sète will meet your expectations with their large stretches of sand.

You may well find your bed and breakfast in Languedoc-Roussillon in Mende in Lozère. It is home to a substantial historical heritage, notably illustrated by the Cathédrale Nore-Dame-et-Saint-Privat. Other places of interest in this département include the Aven Armand cave. Last but not least, all visitors to the département will be spoilt for choice when it comes to hiking! You can organise one in the south in the Grands Causses or in the heart of the Cévennes, or choose to admire the landscapes of Aubrac and La Margeride further north in Lozère. Among the best culinary specialities, don't forget to try the saucisse d'Anduze and the coupétade!

This is the southernmost department of Languedoc-Roussillon and is populated by around 420,000 inhabitants. The Pyrénées-Orientales, bordered to the east by the Mediterranean and to the south by Spain, have a relief marked by the Carlit and Canigou massifs. The seaside resorts of Banyuls-sur-mer (Banyuls-sur-mer) and Canet-en-Roussillon (Canet-en-Roussillon) offer a warm welcome all year round! If you love hiking, you won't be disappointed with the trip! There's no shortage of waymarked footpaths in the area, and you can discover the Céret crests or the Camporells lakes on a beautiful walk. A stopover in the prefecture Perpignan is unavoidable! It is home to major monuments such as the Palace of the Kings of Majorca. Your stay will be a gastronomic success, succumb to the anchovies of Collioure and the delicious ouillade.
