Nord-Pas-de-Calais: generous gastronomy and architectural masterpieces

The Nord-Pas-de-Calais region stands out first and foremost for its generous and authentic cuisine. Its beaches are attractive not only to families but also to thrill-seekers. It also boasts a number of noteworthy religious buildings with well-preserved organs, stained glass windows and other treasures.

Monuments to visit, recipes to enjoy

The two departments that make up the historic Nord-Pas-de-Calais region are packed with places to visit! When you stay in Lille, you won't know which way to turn as there are so many tourist attractions to choose from. A stroll through the historic centre will leave you breathless, as will lunch near the Grande Place. You'll be spoilt for choice! We recommend fricadelle, for example, which are dumplings served in salads or accompanied by appetising caramelised potatoes. You could also enjoy a slice of goyère, better known as tarte au maroilles. Among the desserts that are emblematic of the North are the fairground waffle and the cramique, which is very popular in the Avesnois. This delicacy is very popular at breakfast, with children raving about this soft-crumbed brioche! Once you've regained your strength, head to the Palais des Beaux-Arts. There are sculptures to admire, as well as superb collections of ceramics. Another monument of note is Notre-Dame-de-la Treille cathedral, characterised by its neo-Gothic style.

The Pas-de-Calais is also attractive in a number of ways! Its water sports activities at Cap Blanc Nez or Berck are a big hit with young adults and families. You'll have the chance to try your hand at kite or kite-surfing when the wind blows a little on the North Sea coast. If you're just looking for some colour and a relaxing break, plant your parasol in one of the seaside resorts on the Côte d'Opale. This département also boasts a remarkable historical heritage. Its finest jewels are the crypt of the Basilica of Notre-Dame in Boulogne and the church of Notre-Dame in Calais, which are sure to hold some architectural surprises in store for you. You and the kids can also enjoy a visit to the Nausicaa Aquarium in Boulogne-sur-Mer (Boulogne-sur-Mer). The Pas-de-Calais also promises some great culinary experiences. The Provençals have their bouillabaisse, while the Chtis' have their caudière, a delicious fish soup. They also like to concoct carbonade flamande, a beef dish that's very hearty when paired with delicious home-made chips. To quench your thirst, there's nothing better than a good Picardy beer, which is used in a number of culinary specialities, including coq à la bière. The proximity of the coastline is an inspiration to chefs, some of whom include eel in green sauce on their menus. The mussels of the Picardy coast also satisfy the most demanding gourmets! If you find it hard to wait before dinner, give in to the gurgling of your stomach and enjoy a slice of plum pudding, a popular dessert in the Boulonnais.
