The Hérault's iconic tourist resort attracts 2 million tourists every year. Many of them stay in one of the large pyramid-shaped residences. This urban landscape was designed by Jean Balladur back in the 1960s. But it would be unfair to reduce La Grande-Motte to this atypical architecture. This Beaux-Arts graduate has succeeded in combining vegetation and concrete.
In fact, you'll be immersed in an environment where nature is omnipresent. 80 kilometres of footpaths are open to you in this commune and several districts offer a country-style living environment. At Le Ponant, the houses are surrounded by Mediterranean vegetation, including umbrella pines. Choosing a bed and breakfast in La Grande-Motte also means taking advantage of an advantageous geographical location. Palavas-les-Flots is just 15 kilometres away, while Montpellier is half an hour's drive from the seaside resort where you could spend your holiday.
La Grande-Motte's coastline has many attractions. It is dotted with large stretches of sand and small, intimate rocky coves. You're likely to put your towel down on the Grand Travers beach, a site of inimitable charm! For a seaside lunch or a spot of shopping before soaking up the sun, opt for the town-centre beach, lined with boutiques and restaurants serving typical Midi dishes. The Couchant beach is ideal for those who want to try their hand at water sports. There's also a water sports centre on the Presqu'ile du Ponant, offering a range of leisure activities such as wake-boarding and water-skiing. There's nothing to stop you hiring a motorboat and heading off the coast for an afternoon of peace and quiet. Other popular activities in La Grande-Motte include golf and cycling along the various routes dedicated to cyclists.
Maguelone Cathedral is the must-see tourist attraction in Palavas-les-Flots. Built on a peninsula, it is a place of meditation, characterised by its Romanesque style. In this seaside resort, you can also take a stroll in the Parc du Levant.
Aigues-Mortes is also a major contributor to the region's historical heritage. Set off to discover the ramparts of the fortified town, you won't regret the experience! The Grau-du-Roi Seaquarium gives you the chance to discover fish from all over the world. These include the zebra shark and the impressive bull shark with its sharp teeth. In the tropical area, you won't be able to miss the seahorses, the fascinating aurelian jellyfish and the frightening green moray eel. It's impossible to get bored in Montpellier! The city centre is very lively, as is the Place de la Comédie.
