Saint-Jean-de-Luz is part of Labourd, one of the four provinces of the Basque Country. This commune borders the Atlantic Ocean and is populated by around 13,000 inhabitants. It has a capacity of around 17,000 beds and its population increases tenfold during the summer season. Saint-Jean-de-Luz is surrounded to the north by Bidart and Biarritz, and to the south by the seaside resort of Hendaye, the last French coastal town before Spain. The area around Luz is symbolised by the Socoa, Artha and Sainte-Barbe dykes, built to protect the coast from the swell. Some buildings bear witness to its rich past, such as the Maison Louis XIV, which you can discover on a stroll near the port. It has the advantage of being open to visitors for part of the year, and you can admire the biblical scenes on its painted beams and its characteristic 17th and 18th century furniture. The people of Luz love good food, and Basque specialities have been passed down from generation to generation. One of the recipes you can try is the Saint-Jean-de-Luz macaroon, a sweet treat that's as crunchy as it is chewy!
The Botanical Garden's mission is to promote our plant heritage. It invites Basques and tourists alike to immerse themselves in an exceptional environment. You'll be able to stroll through the natural environments of the Atlantic coastline, including dunes, maritime moors and Atlantic oak forests. Workshops and plant exchanges may be organised during your visit, as these events are designed to raise awareness among the general public.
The heritage of Saint-Jean-de-Luz has been recognised by the Ministry of Culture, which has awarded it the label of Town of Art and History. This is undoubtedly partly thanks to its Saint-Jean-Baptiste church, a remarkable structure that you absolutely must discover! It has a wealth of treasures in store for you, including chandeliers, stained glass windows and, above all, an exceptional altarpiece. If your holidays are synonymous with sporting activities, you'll be in heaven on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean. Try your hand at rafting in the gorges of the Nive Valley and share the thrills with your loved ones! Other water-based pleasures include stand ud paddle, jet ski and towed buoys at the Digue aux chevaux on Saint-Jean-de-Luz's Grande Plage.
You'll enjoy a privileged position in the Labourd region when you book your bed and breakfast in Saint-Jean-de-Luz. Bayonne and its charms are very accessible, so you might as well make the most of it!
This commune is home to the Bonnat-Helleu museum and the Basque museum, in particular. The former houses a superb collection of paintings, while the latter brings together tools and all sorts of objects illustrating the history of the Basque country in France. Stroll around Bayonne town centre and you'll have the opportunity to buy artisanal products and the best foods from the Basque terroirs.
Other must-see sites can be found not far from Saint-Jean-de-Luz, particularly in Biarritz. The panorama you can contemplate from the top of this monument is second to none! Travellers can also enjoy another extraordinary viewpoint from the lighthouse overlooking Cap Hainsart.
