The gastronomy of the Pyrénées-Orientales is renowned for its diversity. Situated on the edge of a pond and close to the Mediterranean, Bages is bound to have a rich maritime terroir. A visit to one of the fine restaurants in Bages will give you the chance to sample some exquisite culinary specialities. Eels feature on the menus of many restaurants and can be prepared in a variety of ways. Eels sautéed with parsley, eels à la narbonnaise or eel stew with fitou: there's something for everyone! The gourmets at Bages will also be delighted by other fish dishes, such as langoustine, hake, cranquette, bass and sea bream. If you prefer meat or poultry, you'll also find what you're looking for! You can't go wrong with duck breast accompanied by pan-fried foie gras and a Gruissan red wine. Foie gras also goes perfectly with cartagène, a sweet liqueur wine typical of the Languedoc region. Bages and the surrounding region are renowned for their rich wine-growing heritage; Côtes du Roussillon, Banyuls Grand Cru or Muscat de Rivesaltes: you'll be spoilt for choice when it comes to livening up your main courses.
The Etang de Bages-Sigean concentrates a large proportion of the activities enjoyed by Languedoc residents and holidaymakers. It covers an area of 4,000 hectares and is part of the Sainte Lucie Regional Nature Reserve. This lagoon environment, preserved from urban development, is a favourite with hikers hoping to catch a glimpse of families of pink flamingos. The paths around the lagoon are also ideal for mountain biking. As you stroll around the site, you're sure to come across local fishermen and water sports enthusiasts. The Narbonne kitesurfing school (Narbonne) introduces adults and teenagers to this highly entertaining board sport! Other popular activities include windsurfing and sea kayaking, which allow visitors to discover this majestic environment. Visitors then flock to the nearby beaches of Gruissan. The Grazel beach, for example, has the advantage of offering access for people with reduced mobility. The Salins beach, meanwhile, has the advantage of being relatively uncrowded and is very popular with kitesurfers.
The neighbouring department, the Aude, enjoys a thriving tourist industry, thanks to its remarkable historical heritage. Your B&B in Bages is less than half an hour's drive from some sumptuous buildings. The cathedral of Saint-Just comes to mind, with its Gothic architecture and gargantuan dimensions. You should then visit the archbishops' palace, an exceptional site that houses the archaeological museum. With children in tow, the ideal place to visit is the Réserve Africaine de Sigean, where you can observe numerous animals from all 4 corners of the world.
