In 1878, starting from Le Monastier-sur-Gazeille in the Haute-Loire, the famous Scottish writer Robert Louis Stevenson and his donkey Modestine travelled the route for twelve days to reach Saint-Jean-du-Gard in the heart of the Cévennes in the department of Gard.
