Come and discover the Clévacances chambres d'hôte in the Bay of Cancale, where you can recharge your batteries by the sea with friendly owners who are charmed by the region. The port of Cancale is renowned for its oysters and shellfish, as well as for its wild coastline stretching from the Pointe du Grouin to Mont Saint-Michel. Take advantage of your holiday in the region to hike the customs trails and visit Le Mont Saint-Michel, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The town of Cancale is located in the department Ille-et-Vilaine, in the region Bretagne North in the Bay of Mont-Saint-Michel near Saint-Malo. It grew out of 2 parishes, "la Houle" and "le Bourg", which were merged into a single parish, linking the port street to the hamlets. And thus bring together the two main activities of fishing and farming.
Book a bed and breakfast on the clevacances.com website and start your stay with a visit to the town's pretty fishing port and its picturesque lanes of fishermen's cottages. This port is still called "la Houle", but has also been called "Cancaven" since 1032, which means "the river cove" in old Breton. The inhabitants were primarily sailors, serving on the king's ships. Then, in the 19th century, they became Terre-Nevas, going out to sea to fish for cod for several months at a time. Further up the village, you'll find houses clustered around the new church of Saint-Méen, which was once a trading centre. Book one of the B&Bs near Saint-Coulomb, and discover the Malouinière de "La Ville Bague" where treasures linked to maritime trading are hidden.
Nowadays, Cancale is known for its oyster farming: the cultivation of oysters, which used to be dredged and are now farmed in parks bathed by the highest tides in Europe. Cancale is also proud of its traditional fishing boats, such as the Bisquine "La Cancalaise", which are paraded at major nautical events.
Rent a bed and breakfast in this region, which offers a wealth of activities to discover. Take a guided tour of the oyster beds at low tide in the port of "la Houle" in Cancale. You can sample them on the spot, or treat yourself to a platter of seafood in one of the port's many restaurants. There are also crêperies and tearooms to warm you up after your invigorating walks. In the market town, near the church, don't miss the "Oyster Washers" fountain. This statue represents the women of Cancale who guarded the town while the men spent months at sea.
This area forms a peninsula, the tip of which is called "le Grouin de Cancale". Book a bed and breakfast in Cancale, a town located on the " Côte d'Émeraude", which stretches as far as the Bay of Erquy. The colour of the sea, sometimes tending towards emerald green, sometimes towards turquoise blue, changes according to the seasons and the tides. It has remained very wild with its moorland of heather, gorse, broom and maritime pines. An ornithological reserve on the Landes island has been created to observe the different species of birds. The site is accessible via the customs paths, where the views are breathtaking.
If you like water sports, you should know that the Port Mer water sports centre offers activities for all the family: sea kayaking, windsurfing, catamaran, optimist, stand up paddle. Sea outings are also organised to discover dolphins in the Bay of Cancale.
During your holiday in one of the Clévacances bed and breakfasts, you can go hiking, cycling or horse-riding all along the coastline, with a greenway and a sports trail built from Saint-Benoît-des-Ondes to Mont-Saint-Michel. And for thrill-seekers, you can go go-karting. A little more sporty, sand yachting is on offer in the communes of Hirel and Cherrueix with a magnificent panorama of the Bay of Mont Saint-Michel.
Need a rest? Rent a bed and breakfast and take advantage of the stretches of fine sandy beach to lay out your towel and take an invigorating dip in the sea from Port Mer near Cancale via Saint-Coulomb to Saint-Malo.
For the end of your holiday, visit Mont-Saint-Michel in the Manche with its abbey and museums. The other way to discover this exceptional site is to walk in the bay, following the tides and shifting sands with a guide.
