Menton, a sunny town on the Côte d'Azur, is renowned for its mild climate, its magnificent gardens and, of course, for the Fête du Citron®. Every year, this emblematic event attracts over 200,000 visitors from the four corners of the globe. The Fête du Citron® is much more than just a festival, it's a cultural and artistic event celebrating the lemon in all its forms, an unforgettable experience that immerses its spectators in an enchanted world of colours and scents.

The Lemon Festival® dates back to the 1890s, when the hoteliers of Menton suggested to the municipality that they create a winter parade to boost the town. In 1896, the first parade saw the light of day, delighting locals and wealthy visitors who had come to seek the sun on the Côte d'Azur. At the time, it was fashionable to spend the winter months in Menton, where the climate was milder than elsewhere. Kings, princes, artists and wealthy travellers frequented the town's palaces, some even building sumptuous villas here. The 1882 parade remains engraved in people's memories, with the presence of Queen Victoria, spectator of a grandiose fireworks display over the bay of Garavan.
In the early years, a custom called the "Moucouleti" was an integral part of the celebrations. Each participant held a small candle and had fun trying to blow out his neighbour's while keeping his own lit. This playful tradition was also an opportunity for young people to get to know each other, creating moments of complicity under the candlelight. Pierre Masséna, a historian of the region, describes this custom as a romantic pretext, where young men would try to blow out the candles of young women in the hope, if they succeeded, of getting a kiss as a reward. This warm, poetic atmosphere helped to make this festival a singular event in Menton tradition.

At the beginning of the 20th century, Menton became Europe's leading lemon producer. A visionary hotelier then proposed adding an exhibition of citrus fruits and flowers in the town's gardens, more specifically at the Hôtel Riviera in 1929. Such was its success that the festival expanded and took to the streets. In 1934, the first official Fête du Citron® took shape, with floats decorated with lemons and oranges, accompanied by charming Mentonnaises. What had been a simple parade became a veritable institution. Two years later, the Biovès gardens hosted the first citrus exhibition, with giant sculptures made of lemons and oranges. François Ferrié, the artist responsible for designing the motifs, brings an artistic dimension that is confirmed and amplified every year.

Today, the Fête du Citron® is one of the region's flagship events, attracting thousands of curious and enthusiastic visitors every year. For over two weeks, the streets of Menton are decked out in vitamin-packed colours. The public can attend the daytime and night-time Corsos, parades of floats magnificently decorated with citrus fruits and enlivened by musical groups and dancers. In the Biovès gardens, an exhibition of citrus fruit designs transports visitors into a fairytale world, free of charge. The event also includes the Salon de l'Artisanat and the Festival des Orchidées, offering a variety of cultural and sensory discoveries.
Since 2019, the Fête du Citron® has been listed in the inventory of French intangible cultural heritage, a recognition that underlines its unique and valuable character in the French cultural landscape.
