The commune of Saint-Malo, often referred to as the Cité Corsaire, is populated by 45 000 inhabitants. It is part of the Ile-et-Vilaine department and is separated from Dinard by the coastal river Rance. Saint-Malo is surrounded by Saint-Méloire-des-Ondes, Saint-Coulomb and Saint-Jouan-des Guérets. It is Brittany's second-largest commercial port and one of the region's most popular seaside resorts. Holidaymakers can take advantage of the region's stunning scenery, and in particular its coastline of rocky coves and beautiful sandy beaches. Its cuisine is authentic, rich in maritime produce. Don't hesitate to try cotriade, a delicious fish soup, or bernique stew, a popular recipe in Brittany. If you're a meat lover, the galette-saucisse will delight your taste buds! This easy-to-make dish consists of a buckwheat pancake with a pork sausage inside. To round off a delicious meal, why not try the Saint-Malo potato? It looks exactly like the potato grown in the region, but it's a delicious treat made with crushed almonds, mixed with cocoa and flavoured with kirsch liqueur.
The well-preserved remains in Saint-Malo are all worth visiting during your holiday. It's unthinkable to pass by the Grand'Porte without taking a moment to admire it! This is the city's oldest gateway, with two towers and a firing platform. Your bed and breakfast in Saint-Malo may also be close to the Bastion Saint-Louis, built to defend access to the harbour basin. The town's rich past is also illustrated by the Malouinières, spacious residences built by wealthy shipowners in the 18th century. La Malouinière de la Chipaudière is open to the public, and this listed private historic monument will fascinate you with its sumptuous formal gardens. Saint-Malo also has a number of verdant spots to relax in, including the Parc de la Briantais. Overlooking the River Rance, it is home to a wide variety of vegetation and a large number of mammals. One activity that delights adults and children alike in the south of the Corsair city is a visit to the Grand Aquarium! The big-bellied seahorses and dragon morays amaze visitors in the tropical room. Then there's the touch tank, where you can come face-to-face with the brown stingray and the large dogfish. You'll also see the bull shark, the loggerhead turtle and other fascinating species in the various aquariums. Weather permitting, put your towel down on the beaches of Le Val or Rothéneuf and recharge your batteries in peace and quiet!
If the ramparts of Saint-Malo haven't disappointed you, set off to discover the remains of the city of Dinan.
Read the signs dotted around the historic centre, and your visit will be all the more instructive! We also recommend a visit to the superb Basilica of Saint-Sauveur, a building that combines Romanesque and Gothic styles. Other places of interest in the Ile-et-Vilaine region include the oyster market in Cancale and the Château de Fougères in the commune of the same name.
