Two culinary traditions from the Var have been passed down from generation to generation: Socca and Cade. They originate from Nice and Toulon respectively. These are chickpea flour-based preparations eaten straight from the oven.
If you're a vegetable lover, discover artichoke à la barigoule, which goes perfectly with a Coteaux-varois-en-provence.
Those with a sweet tooth are spoilt for choice during holidays in the Midi! Don't miss the white nougat, a confection particularly popular in Signes and Ollioules. This confection is one of the thirteen desserts of Provence and is usually presented in the form of small cubes or sticks. If you've still got a bit of an appetite, let yourself be tempted by the delicious tarte tropézienne, a brioche filled with a mixture of buttercream and custard.
Among holidaymakers' favourite pastimes are water activities. These are practised in the Gorges du Verdon, an impressive canyon located between the Var and the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence. You can try your hand at canyoning or rafting with friends and experience some thrilling sensations.
On Lac de Sainte-Croix, there's also plenty of fun for kayakers and windsurfers. There are other family activities on offer, such as high acrobatic courses. These include Le Royaume des arbres at Le Castellet and the accrobranche du Défens at Montauroux, a leisure park for all ages.
The Var coastline is home to pebble beaches, stretches of sand and wild little coves. If you stop over in Hyères, you can swim in the clear waters of the Ayguade beach or the Vignette beach.
Not far away is the Domaine de l'Estagnol, located near the Fort de Brégançon. It's a heavenly spot, where holidaymakers enjoy a huge shady pine forest.
