Oyat (Ammophila arenaria) is a species of perennial plant that grows in sandy soils. It has been used in particular to fix the dunes on certain French coastlines. "Oyat" is a word of Picardy origin. Ammophila comes from the Greek and means "sand-loving". Arenaria comes from the Latin arena: sand. On our first visit to Fort-Mahon, we literally fell under the spell of these oyat-covered dunes. L'Oyat des Amis is a nod to this, in the hope that it will help to bring us together and maintain links with our loved ones.
