The Abbey of Saint-Rambert-en-Bugey has its roots in over 1,500 years of spiritual history. In the 5th century, Domitian, a hermit from Italy, founded a monastery above the Albarine valley, which was to become one of the region's major spiritual centres. Around 680, Ragnebert, a Merovingian nobleman exiled in Bugey, was murdered on the banks of the Brevon. Educated in the monastery, he became Saint Rambert through popular devotion, giving his name to the abbey and the village. From the 9th century onwards, the Benedictine abbey spread its influence over some twenty priories, from Lyon to the gates of the Maurienne. Since 1949, the Sisters of Notre Dame des Missions have been bringing this exceptional place to life. Their congregation, founded in Lyon in 1861 by Euphrasie Barbier, has a missionary vocation focused on Asia: Vietnam, the Philippines, Myanmar, Bangladesh and India. This openness to the world was embodied right here: between 1949 and 1979, more than 500 young Eurasian girls, fleeing Indochina, grew up at the Abbey. These "Daughters of the Abbey" found refuge in this protective setting, between mountains and forests. Faithful to their charism - Contemplation, Mission, Communion - the sisters perpetuate the spirit of welcome and sharing that is the soul of this place. The Abbey is home to two remarkable heritage treasures. The Romanesque crypt of Saint-Domitien, listed as a Historic Monument since 1945, dates from the 9th and 10th centuries. Long forgotten after the abbey was destroyed during the Revolution, it was rediscovered by chance in 1838 during a landslide. Comprising an apse and two apsidioles separated by columns with sculpted capitals, it is an invitation to meditate in an atmosphere imbued with fifteen centuries of prayer. The monks' former boiler room, the only heated room in the medieval monastery, bears witness to monastic life in days gone by. Nestling at an altitude of 350 metres, in the heart of a vast wooded park, the Abbey offers an enchanting setting where time seems to stand still. Chapel, library, gardens: every space exudes serenity. A place where history, spirituality and the beauty of nature come together to offer visitors an authentic interlude of peace.
