Equipped with an awning, the terrace is protected from the sun's rays and allows you to enjoy a place in the shade to take your meals. GASTRONOMY, HERITAGE AND THE SWEETNESS OF LIFE IN THE CANTAL CHESTNUT GROVE The “Porte du Midi” in the south-west of the Cantal department is a peaceful and green area. As its name suggests, the Châtaigneraie owes its name to the chestnut. An ecomuseum and an annual fair are dedicated to him in the village of Mourjou. The Chestnut House presents a museum space dedicated to chestnut production. You can also discover: a discovery trail, a remarkable 500-year-old chestnut tree, underground passages from the Middle Ages and a shop selling local products. During your stay, farm visits and country markets will allow you to taste local specialities. The “Pays Vézien Market” in Lafeuillade-en-Vézie takes place one Sunday a month. It brings together producers of cheese, charcuterie, honey, etc. from Cantal, Lot and Aveyron. A market not to be missed! From the prefecture of Cantal, via the Small Towns of Character® of Montsalvy and Marcolès, to Conques, classified among the Most Beautiful Villages of France®, beautiful heritage getaways await you. Leaning against the Cantal mountains, Aurillac, the city-prefecture has a historic center with many points of interest. Old houses lined up along the banks of the Jordanne, rich mansions, Museum of Art and Archaeology, Museum of Volcanoes, Saint-Géraud Abbey, or the Saint-Etienne castle, are to be discovered during a stroll. . At the end of August, for more than 40 years, Aurillac has hosted the International Street Theater Festival. Did you know ? Aurillac is the umbrella capital. You can pick up a “pip” in one of the century-old shops in the city centre. Perched 800 meters above sea level, Montsalvy has a beautiful built heritage. You can admire half-timbered houses, buildings with slate roofs, a castle and an abbey church. In July, basketry is in the spotlight on the occasion of the basket festival. On leaving Montsalvy, stop at Puy de l'Arbre to contemplate the Cantal mountains and the Aveyronnais Aubrac. Located on one of the Compostela routes, the village of Marcolès is a former priory with cobbled streets and granite houses. The circular enclosure and the two gates testify to its medieval past. Exhibitions and festivals enliven the village for a good part of the year. Conques, in the neighboring department of Aveyron, is a major stopover village on the way to Santiago de Compostela. The Sainte-Foy abbey is a masterpiece of Romanesque art. We come here to contemplate both its famous tympanum of the Last Judgment and the stained glass windows by Pierre Soulages. Stroll through the medieval streets, sit on the terrace of a café and let yourself be surprised by the magic of the place. Among the picturesque villages to discover around your vacation rental, we should mention Entraygues-sur-Truyère or the village of Fel. Beautiful views over the Lot valley, terraced vineyards and a European center for contemporary ceramics, the Fel has many surprises in store for you. ON LAND OR IN THE WATER, THERE IS NO SHORTAGE OF OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES! Walk the hiking trails, crisscross the country roads by bike, rush headlong on a mountain bike, swim or even fish: you will be spoiled for choice to give yourself to your heart's content. To discover the hilly rural landscapes of the Châtaigneraie, nothing beats the hiking trails. Well marked and of different levels, they are easily accessible. For a day, let yourself be tempted by a trip to the Cantal mountains, in the heart of the Auvergne Volcanoes Regional Nature Park. Take the direction of the Col du Pas de Peyrol, take the path to the summit of Puy Mary, classified as a Grand Site de France. At 1,787 meters above sea level, the view is breathtaking. On the way back, stop at Salers, one of the Most Beautiful Villages in France®. Several choices are available to you for practicing nautical activities. The Calvinet freshwater swimming pool, the Maurs lake in Leucamp or the Canoe Sport Nature base in Vieillevie. Located in the Lot valley, this nautical base offers a wide range of activities: canoeing, kayaking, paddle in the river or simply swimming. On the shores of Lake Saint-Etienne-Cantalès you can rent boats, paddles, pedal boats, and swim on the equipped beaches of Rénac and Espinet. 13 km long, the lake is a famous place for zander fishing. Confirmed fishermen and amateurs will undoubtedly find something to satisfy their passion! The Lacapelle-en-Vézie lake, the Moulin du Teil lake in Rouget or the Moulinier lake in Montsalvy are open to fishing. If you are on holiday with the family: the animal park in the valley of the deer, in Junhac, or the discovery trail of the Gorges de la Jordanne, in Saint-Cirgues-de-Jordanne, are well suited.
