Hikes, breathtaking panoramas and authentic flavors The Cantal mountains form the largest volcano in Europe. The paths are popular with hikers who explore wild nature and cross passes, ridges and peaks to admire breathtaking panoramas. Here we give you some ideas for walks and activities to do during your stay in Saint-Jacques-des-Blats. This overview will surely awaken your desire to put down your luggage (or your backpack) in Cantal! To gently get to know the Cantal mountains, start with the Hauts de Saint-Jacques hike. This small 3.6 km loop, starting from Saint-Jacques-des-Blats, is accessible to the whole family. It passes through the Bouguette site, a belvedere with an orientation table which offers a magnificent panorama of the Cère valley, the Plomb du Cantal and the Puy Griou. The Via Arverna takes walkers from Clermont-Ferrand to Santiago de Compostela. For the record, the cross installed in front of the church of Saint-Jacques-des-Blats represents a sculpted character: it is Saint Jacques as a pilgrim. Departing or arriving from Saint-Jacques-des-Blats, let yourself be tempted by a stage of this Jacquaire route, certainly secondary, but rich in exceptional landscapes. The Plomb du Cantal, at 1,855 meters above sea level, is the highest point of the Cantal volcano. You can reach it on foot, departing from Saint-Jacques-des-Blats, from the hamlet of Gardes. The climb is long and steep, but it offers a nice viewpoint over the Puy Griou and on arrival a splendid view of the neighboring mountains. To access Plomb du Cantal more easily, take the cable car from Lioran station. The cable car is accessible to pedestrians, mountain bikers and paragliders. From the summit, departure for hikes or return to the station to enjoy the activities and entertainment. Lioran Station is 8 km from your vacation rental, in Saint-Jacques-des-Blats. In summer, people come there for hiking, mountain biking and many outdoor activities. Winter is time for skiing and board sports. The Lioran ski area, located between 1160 and 1850 meters above sea level, has 43 slopes and 18 ski lifts. Whether you are an experienced skier or a beginner, you will appreciate the family spirit of this mid-mountain resort. Puy Griou overlooks, at 1,690 meters, the village of Saint-Jacques-des-Blats. Its summit is characterized by a cone of phonolite, a stone that rings when you tap on it. You can reach it on foot from Saint-Jacques-des-Blats (marked route), the last meters of ascent are quite technical. Here again, a superb view awaits you! Puy Mary - Grand Site de France is the emblematic summit of the Cantal volcano. By car, it is accessible accessible from the Col du Pas de Peyrol (closed in winter). To reach its summit (1,783 meters), take the prepared path. The Pas de Peyrol site house, at the foot of Puy Mary, offers a museum space on the theme of volcanoes. There you can find information on the local fauna and flora as well as on the 34 short hiking trails (PR) and 2 GR® which run through the Puy Mary territory. The climb of Pas de Peyrol by bike is a legendary climb, made famous by the Tour de France. Do you dare to try the adventure? The Gorges du Pas de Cère, in Thiézac, will offer you a completely different setting. By walking this 5 km path, you will move along the edge of the river (the Cère) then into undergrowth to reach the belvedere of the Roucolle waterfall. Cantal is a land of hiking, it is also a land of cheese. If you come in summer, you will see cows in the summer pastures. Cantal, Salers, Saint-Nectaire, which one will you prefer? Take advantage of markets or farm visits to producers to taste them all. Good tasting !
