Hello, I’m Alain Stéfanello. I bought the hamlet of Le Plançon, which was almost in ruins, in 2002 and have gradually restored it. Through hard work, I’ve created four holiday cottages. Seven years ago, I sold a house comprising two holiday cottages (which is now on the market again). At present, there are two of us living in the hamlet: one year-round tenant and myself. The ‘Le Cladéou’ holiday cottage for two people is situated between the chestnut drying house – which has been converted into a cycle storage room – and my own home. As an animal lover, I have three ewes, one ram, two Brigasque lambs – an old French breed with a small population – and one mule, which help me maintain the property, one cockerel, which I let out in the morning from 10.00 am, a few hens, one gander, two Toulouse geese, two Guinea geese and some Muscovy ducks, which live in a fenced-in enclosure of nearly 1,000 m² to keep them safe from foxes. I also have two cats, two Pyrenean Mountain Dogs who live amongst the sheep, and one Pyrenean Shepherd whom I saved from being put down as she’s a very poor herding dog – she just likes her soup and being stroked. The hamlet, surrounded by meadows and forests of chestnut and holm oak trees, overlooks a river that flows all year round, with a waterfall at the entrance to the hamlet and several swimming pools; there are no crops within a kilometre of the hamlet. The hamlet is accessed via a tarmac road leading right up to the houses, followed by an unpaved track, so there is very little traffic. There are several starting points for walking trails on site; I have detailed maps. We are lucky toa grocery shop selling local and organic produce, run by the producers themselves, with bread and pastries made on the premises and baked in a wood-fired oven, 3 km away in the village of Rocles, and a bakery in Joannas where bread and pastries are also made on the premises and baked in a wood-fired oven. There’s a small weekly market selling local produce on Saturday afternoons in Joannas, with entertainment. There’s also a larger market 10 km away in the medieval town of Largentière.
