What to do in Bazas and the South Gironde? Sports, leisure activities and heritage to discover A stay in Bazas means discovering one of the most beautiful medieval towns in the Gironde, in the heart of the South Gironde, amongst forests, vineyards, lakes, castles and Gascon traditions. This destination appeals equally to nature lovers, heritage enthusiasts and families looking for outdoor activities. 🏰 Heritage and unmissable sights Start with the majestic Saint-Jean-Baptiste Cathedral in Bazas, a Gothic gem listed by UNESCO on the Way of St James. Its sculpted façade, stained-glass windows and history make it the town’s most iconic monument. Next, take a stroll around the medieval arcaded square, admiring the stately homes, the historic market hall and the ancient fortifications that bear witness to the rich past of this former episcopal city. Don’t miss Roquetaillade Castle, one of the finest medieval castles in the Gironde, situated just a few kilometres from Bazas. 🚴 Sports and nature activities Hiking enthusiasts will enjoy the Lac de la Prade trail, a nature walk of around 9 km that passes through a remarkable site for birdwatching, particularly grey herons. Cyclists can take the famous Mios–Bazas cycle route, built on a former railway line and linking the Arcachon Basin to southern Gironde. The Promenade de la Brèche also offers a pleasant walk or cycle along the foot of the town’s ramparts. 🌳 Fun family activities For a day full of thrills, discover Aventures Sud Gironde, a leisure park offering tree-top adventure courses, adventure trails and outdoor activities for all ages. Nearby, Mystic Woods Park offers immersive adventure games in the forest, which are very popular with families and groups of friends. Children will also enjoy the Bazas playground and the town’s many green spaces. 🎣 Fishing, nature watching and relaxation The area is renowned for its unspoilt natural spaces. Lake La Prade is an ideal spot for fishing, picnics, wildlife photography and birdwatching. 🍷 Cuisine and traditions of the South Gironde Bazas is famous for its Bazadaise cattle breed, its traditional markets and its Gascon cuisine. The weekly market on Place de la Cathédrale is one of the most renowned in the South Gironde. Here you’ll find foie gras, farm produce, Gascon pâtés and local specialities. Food lovers will also enjoy the famous ‘Merveilles de Bazas’, delicate meringues that have become a symbol of the town. 🌲 Within 30 km of Bazas The Landes de Gascogne forest for hiking and mountain biking. The vineyards of Sauternes, Barsac and Graves. The River Ciron and its canoeing and kayaking activities. The charming villages of Saint-Macaire and Uzeste. The medieval castles of southern Gironde. The nature reserves and wetlands of the Landes de Gascogne Regional Nature Park.

When you arrive in Bazas, you have two options for parking your car: - either in the Cathedral Square, near the chemist’s (on the left as you enter the square); - or in the car park by the old schools (enter ‘Centre Marcel Martin’ into your sat-nav). This car park is strongly recommended if you’re arriving on a Friday, as the market takes place on the square on Saturday mornings and parking is prohibited there. In either case, as soon as you’ve parked, please call us on 05 56 65 69 85 (preferably, as mobile reception can be patchy in the neighbourhood) or 06 65 51 97 54, and we’ll come and meet you to take you to your accommodation, which is 50 metres away, whichever car park you’ve chosen. Cyclists can go directly to 20 Rue Bragous (the first street on the left after the chemist’s) to park their bikes securely.
