Must-see attractions on the Île d’Oléron and in the surrounding area in Charente-Maritime: Chassiron Lighthouse – The symbol of the north of the island. Its 224 steps offer an exceptional panoramic view of the ocean, the Île de Ré and the Pertuis d’Antioche. The lighthouse garden and the old fish locks are also well worth a visit. Port of Saint-Denis-d’Oléron – Promenade, restaurants, market and departure point for sea excursions, notably to Fort Boyard. Château-d’Oléron Citadel – A must-see of Oléron’s military heritage, with the famous oyster huts and craft workshops nearby. La Cotinière – A bustling fishing port, ideal for discovering maritime life, sampling seafood and strolling through the shops. Fort Royer – A traditional oyster-farming site where you can explore the world of oyster huts, salt marshes and oyster farming. Port des Salines – Well worth a visit for its salt marshes, scenery and heritage linked to traditional salt production. Fort Boyard – A boat trip is one of the iconic experiences of a stay on Oléron. Talmont-sur-Gironde, Royan and Meschers-sur-Gironde – To round off your stay with a taste of local heritage, the estuary’s landscapes and the troglodyte caves. Enjoying sporting activities Cycling is probably one of the best ways to explore the island. Saint-Denis-d’Oléron boasts an extensive cycle network, allowing you to reach beaches, villages, harbours, marshes and natural sites without having to use the main roads. Also recommended: Surfing and bodyboarding on the beaches of the wild coast, particularly around Les Huttes. Sailing and catamaran sailing, with sailing schools and water sports centres on the island. Stand-up paddleboarding and sea kayaking to explore the coastline in a different way. Kitesurfing and windsurfing for fans of board sports and thrills. Hiking around Chassiron, the marshes and the coastline. Mountain biking and cycle touring on the island’s paths and trails. Beach fishing on the rocky foreshore, particularly around Chassiron and Chaucre, whilst observing local regulations. Sea fishing and boat trips from the harbours. Sand yachting, particularly on the large beaches in the south of the island Fun and family-friendly activities For a Clévacances advert, I would particularly highlight: Terra Aventura in Saint-Denis-d’Oléron, a treasure hunt in the form of geocaching, ideal for families. A boat trip around Fort Boyard. Marais aux Oiseaux to discover the island’s wildlife. Iléo Water Park in Dolus-d’Oléron. The Baudet du Poitou donkey farm near Saint-Georges-d’Oléron. A tour of the oyster huts and oyster tasting. Local markets and night markets in season. The Saint-Trojan miniature railway for a unique family outing. Walks through the villages of La Brée-les-Bains, Domino, Saint-Pierre-d’Oléron, Boyardville and Saint-Trojan-les-Bains. Top beaches Near Saint-Denis, there’s a variety of atmospheres to choose from: La Boirie Beach: a sheltered, family-friendly spot with its famous colourful beach huts. Les Huttes Beach: wilder and particularly good for board sports. Chaucre and Domino beaches: ideal for alternating between swimming, walking and exploring the coastline. Boyardville beaches: popular for their quieter, family-friendly atmosphere. Les Huttes beach is particularly well-known for surfing, kitesurfing and windsurfing.
