Sports activities not to be missed Surfing, bodyboarding and board sports Discover Vert-Bois beach, renowned for its waves and natural setting. Surf schools offer lessons for beginners and experienced surfers alike. Depending on the conditions, why not also try stand-up paddleboarding, sea kayaking or sailing? Cycling and walking Explore the cycle paths through pine forests, along beaches, through marshes and past oyster-farming villages. It’s a brilliant way to explore the island at your own pace, as a couple or with the family. Canoeing, kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding in the marshes For a unique outing close to nature, explore the waterways and oyster-farming landscapes by canoe or kayak. An ideal activity for spotting wildlife and enjoying the tranquillity of the marshes. Golf and mini-golf Golf enthusiasts can head to the Saint-Pierre-d’Oléron course. For a more laid-back experience, mini-golf is a fun activity to enjoy with the children. Fun family activities Iléo Aquatic Centre Swimming pools and water activities for family fun, especially when the weather isn’t so good. Facilities and opening times vary depending on the season. Marais aux Oiseaux A place to discover the island’s wildlife and natural habitats, perfect for teaching children about biodiversity and birdwatching. Myocastors Park A unique experience to get up close to animals and enjoy a family outing that’s a change from the beach. Saint-Trojan Miniature Railway A unique journey through the pine forest to the beaches in the south of the island, particularly popular with families. Must-see tourist attractions on the Île d’Oléron Chassiron Lighthouse At the northern tip of the island, climb the 224 steps to admire a 360° panoramic view of the ocean, the coastline and the neighbouring islands. The garden and museum make for a lovely addition to the visit. Chassiron Lighthouse Château-d’Oléron and its citadel Stroll along the ramparts, explore the harbour and the colourful artisans’ huts. It’s also a lovely place to wander around and discover local crafts. La Cotinière Harbour Experience the atmosphere of a bustling fishing harbour, with its colourful boats and seafood specialities. An unmissable stop to sample fish and seafood. Port des Salines Discover the salt marshes, the salt-maker’s trade and the history of salt harvesting. An educational visit that gives you an insight into the island’s traditions. The oyster-farming village of Fort-Royer Immerse yourself in the world of oyster farmers, discover the traditional huts and the landscapes of the Marennes-Oléron basin. Some tours offer the chance to learn more about oyster production. Excursions to plan around the island Fort Boyard Set off on a boat trip to get a closer look at the famous fort from the water. Departure times depend on the operator, sea conditions and the season. The Île d’Aix A refreshing change of scenery where you won’t need a car, with small beaches, walking trails and maritime heritage. A great idea for a full day out. Rochefort and the Corderie Royale For a cultural outing, discover the history of the naval shipyard, the Corderie Royale and the quays of the Charente. La Rochelle and its Old Port Set aside a day to stroll through the arcaded streets, explore the towers of the Old Port, visit the aquarium or enjoy the outdoor cafés and shops. Brouage, a fortified village A pretty historic village surrounded by marshes, ideal for a heritage walk, exploring the countryside and birdwatching. My tips for making the most of your stay - For families with children: the Iléo water park, the Marais aux Oiseaux, Myocastors Park and the little train at Saint-Trojan. - For sports enthusiasts: cycling, surfing at Vert-Bois, kayaking in the marshes, hiking and golf. - For history buffs: the Chassiron lighthouse, the Château-d’Oléron citadel, Fort-Royer and Rochefort. - For food lovers: Marennes-Oléron oysters, fresh fish in La Cotinière and local markets. - For nature lovers: salt marshes, unspoilt beaches, pine forests and birdwatching. Remember to check opening times and seasonal opening dates before each outing. To plan walks, activities and current events, the Dolus-d’Oléron Tourist Office website is a useful resource: Dolus-d’Oléron Tourist Office. My tip: for a stay of a few days, alternate between a day at the beach and a day cycling, a day exploring heritage sites and oyster-farming villages, followed by a boat trip to Fort Boyard or the Île d’Aix. This allows you to discover several different aspects of Charente-Maritime without having to make too many long journeys.
A stay at the Résidence Les Franches – Dolus-d’Oléron The Résidence Les Franches, situated at 4 Avenue de la Grande Baie in Dolus-d’Oléron, is a great base from which to explore the Île d’Oléron, its fine sandy beaches, cycle paths, oyster ports and the major tourist attractions of Charente-Maritime - From La Rochelle: head towards Rochefort, then follow signs for Marennes and the Île d’Oléron. Cross the Île d’Oléron bridge, then follow signs for Dolus-d’Oléron. - From Bordeaux: take the A10 towards Saintes, then follow signs for Rochefort, Marennes and the Île d’Oléron. - From Paris: take the A10 towards Bordeaux, then follow signs for Saintes, Rochefort and the Île d’Oléron. Once on the island, follow the signs for Dolus-d’Oléron, then head for Avenue de la Grande Baie and number 4. Top tip: during the summer months, allow plenty of time to cross the bridge and drive around the island, particularly on busy Saturdays and sunny weekends.
