A city of art and culture, Marseille has more than one wonder to share. With its 26 centuries of existence, it combines tradition and modernity.
The city remains deeply marked by its past and constantly exhumes the vestiges of all the cities that have been superimposed over the centuries. It is a true journey from the Greek and Roman origins to the modernity of our century and the great architectural achievements of the 21st century, including the medieval religious foundations, the 16th century fortifications, the rich mansions of XVIIth and XVIIIth centuries and the numerous prestigious buildings built in the XIXth century.
Our Lady of the Guard
Emblematic figure of the City, she watches over sailors, fishermen and all the Marseillais. During your stay in the city of Marseille, visit the "Bonne Mother" as we call it in Marseilles, and admire from the top of the hill, the panorama that is offered to you.
A must-see for any weekend in Marseille
It is impossible to visit the Phocaean city without going through the famous avenue, which connects the Old Port to the Reformed church for 1 km. So to better enjoy the scenery, here is a small guided tour, historical reminders to support:
La Canebière was opened in 1666 at the time of the extension of the town ordered by Louis XIV. Its name comes from the Provençal Canebe (hemp), which perpetuates the memory of the cordiers installed here since the Middle Ages. But it was only with the departure of the Grand Arsenal at the end of the 18th century that the avenue was extended to the port and that beautiful buildings were built there.
The Old Port of Marseille
Since 26 centuries, the Old Port is the prestigious theater where the history of Marseille is played. During the Antiquity and the Middle Ages, the Greek city (Massalia), then Roman (Massilia) and medieval (Masiho) developed on the north shore and then in the South in the seventeenth century. From then on, the port entrance was to be guarded by two forts, Fort Saint-Nicolas and Fort Saint-Jean.
One of the symbols of the Old Port was the ferry bridge, a metal structure inaugurated in 1905 between the two forts, but unfortunately destroyed after the war.
In 2013, the Old Port was renovated (access to the port easier, reduced traffic, creation of a shade by Norman Foster) and remains today the heart of Marseille under the benevolent gaze of Notre-Dame-de- the guard.
