Want to get away from it all and head for Barfleur? This small seaside resort in the north of the Cotentin peninsula is one of France's favourite villages. You'll love staying here in a bed and breakfast to enjoy the charm and art of living of this seaside village in the English Channel.
During your holiday in a bed and breakfast, you can take advantage of the seaside to relax, stroll along the fine sandy beaches of Normandy, admire the comings and goings of the boats in the port of Barfleur or simply taste the gastronomic specialities of Normandy from a sunny terrace.
Barfleur and its surroundings have many tourist attractions that you will have the opportunity to discover during your stay in a bed and breakfast. Firstly, you will enjoy strolling through the streets of this Cotentin village and observing the houses and buildings. Its grey granite buildings and the finials adorning the roofs of the houses give Barfleur a unique charm.
Installed on the tip of Barfleur, you'll find the Gatteville lighthouse, whose role is to signal the strong currents in the Barfleur roadstead and thus warn boats of potential risks. Today, this lighthouse is open to visitors and a small exhibition traces the history of France's lighthouses.
A few kilometres south of Barfleur lies Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue. This other village on the Cotentin coast is also one of France's favourite villages. Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue is very popular for its oyster farming, but above all for its proximity to the island of Tatihou. From the port of Barfleur, you can admire the view of the island of Tatihou, which faces Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue. The island is open to visitors and features a museum and the remains of a fort designed to protect the coast from possible English invasion. To get there, you can make the crossing at low tide, or by taking one of the amphibious shuttles that bridge the gap between Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue and the island of Tatihou.
If you want to return to the comforts of a city on your holiday, don't panic, the town of Cherbourg is just a few minutes' drive from Barfleur. You'll find plenty of restaurants, bars and a cinema, as well as temporary and permanent exhibitions for you to visit. A number of tourist attractions are particularly popular with visitors to Cherbourg-en-Cotentin. First of all, the Cité de la Mer is a must-see in the town. The Cité de la Mer is an aquarium and museum that can be described as a scientific and fun park focusing on underwater exploration and the deep sea. Other cultural attractions include the Grande Rade and the Gare Maritime, both of which are symbols of the city's architecture in their own way. Museums such as the Musée Thomas Henry and the Musée de la Libération will appeal to art and history enthusiasts.
