Discover the attractions of Hendaye on your next holiday. Its beautiful sandy beaches and idyllic panoramas have been its distinguishing features and charm for decades. Find your bed and breakfast in Hendaye from among the many Clévacances-labelled offers.
17,000 souls reside in this charming commune of the Pyrénées-Atlantiques. Hendaye has the advantage of being on the edge of the ocean, at the south-western tip of France. It belongs to the province of Labourd and borders the Bay of Txingudi, which separates it from Spain. Hendaye is symbolised by its pretty marina, its Basque architecture and its main sandy beach, which stretches for 3 kilometres. Your holiday in this commune will also delight you gastronomically. The dishes on the menus of the restaurants are an example of Basque cuisine that is as rich as it is appetising! For example, you can try axoa, a dish based on minced veal or beef, combined with onions, chillies and peppers. Or try elzekaria, a culinary speciality similar to garbure. This soup, made with white cabbage, onions and bacon, has a subtle flavour. For dessert, macaroons are often shared, a speciality that we owe to our Basque friends in Saint-Jean-de-Luz.
To find the ingredients of the terroirs surrounding Hendaye, head for one of the two traditional markets. They are held respectively on the Place de la République and opposite the marina, in the heart of the beach district.
What activities can the family enjoy in this seaside resort? The guided tours organised by the Tourist Office allow you to explore every nook and cranny of this Basque commune. The guides will take you on a tour of the remains of the Vauban ramparts, the Gaztelu Zahar pediment and the neo-Basque inspired villas that symbolise the town's architectural heritage. Exploring Château Abbadia also has plenty of surprises in store! Take a look at its richly decorated rooms and visit its observatory, where a great deal of scientific research was carried out. This seaside resort is also renowned for its water sports. Try your hand at stand-up paddling and enjoy the magnificent coastal scenery! For thrills, flyfish, flysurfing and jetskiing are available on Hendaye's various beaches.
It would be a shame to miss out on the most beautiful sites that exist around Hendaye. We're thinking, for example, of the medieval city of Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, which boasts an incredible architectural heritage! If you need to recharge your batteries for a day, Cambo-les-Bains and its thermal baths will be just what you're looking for. You are likely to stay in a bed and breakfast in Hendaye and go explore the riches of the emblematic Basque communes. At Anglet, the spectacle can be seen on the waves, where you can meet a large number of surfers! A visit to Biarritz is also well worth your while, as it boasts a remarkable aquarium and attracts many holidaymakers thanks to its historic heritage. The Rock of the Virgin and the fishermen's port will fill you with wonder, as will the church of Saint-Eugénie. Continue your exploration in Bayonne, a bustling city renowned for being the capital of chocolate and ham.
