The restaurateurs of Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port contribute to the influence of Basque cuisine throughout France. They are committed to highlighting the tastiest recipes from their region. One of the best addresses in the area is Le relais de la vive on Place Charles de Gaulle. Its brigade prepares Chipirons à la plancha and Pavé de merlu à l'espagnole to perfection. If you stop off at this restaurant, you'll also have the pleasure of tasting the raw trout caught in the Baïgorry valley and the local ewe's milk cheese, accompanied by black cherry jam. A few kilometres from the town centre, there is the Andreinia restaurant, which offers a wide variety of dishes, each more exquisite than the last: veal Axoa, ham Piperade, Porcini omelette, Basquaise salad etc…
Our gastronomic heritage is also rich in sweet treats! It's hard to resist a piece of Gâteau Basque or a few Kanougas, soft caramels flavoured in different ways. Last but not least, a glass of Izarra, a local liqueur that is also used to make cocktails, is a great way to round off a lunch or dinner.
A visit to Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port has some wonderful discoveries in store for all its visitors. First and foremost is the historic heart, with the citadel redesigned by the famous architect Vauban. From its summit, you can enjoy an exceptional view of the vineyards, the Pyrenean mountains and the valleys of the Pays de Cize. As you continue on your way, don't forget to enter the Church of Notre-Dame du Bout du Pont, built in the 13th century AD. The Porte Saint Jacques, the entrance for pilgrims on their way to Compostela, also bears witness to the town's rich historical heritage. A visit to the Bishops' Prison is also a must if you want to understand the town's history. As a family, it's great fun to explore the most beautiful landscapes in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques by mountain bike from Banca or Saint-Etienne-de-Baigorry. Looking for a thrill? Then rafting is just what you're looking for! Several clubs organise trips on the rivers near Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port.
. It would be a shame to stay in the Pyrénées-Atlantique without going for a walk by the Ocean! A little jaunt to Saint-Jean-de-Luz or Soorts-Hossegor will do you a world of good, especially if the fine weather is there.
An unmissable destination is just under 2 hours' drive from your Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port B&B. This is Lourdes, the third largest pilgrimage site in the world. There is such a special atmosphere in this place where so many miracles are said to have happened! The number of visitors never falters, with the Basilica of St Pius X and the Museum of the Nativity among the highlights.
