A place steeped in history and spirituality
First a place of worship for the Celts, the hill became an important Christian site over the centuries. The Basilica of Notre-Dame de Sion, located at the top of the hill, bears witness to this long spiritual history. The writer Maurice Barrès, in his novel La Colline Inspirée (The Inspired Hill), praised the place, describing it as "a place where the spirit blows...".
The stars of Sion: a geological treasure
The "stars of Zion", small crinoid fossils dating back more than 200 million years, are one of the hill's geological treasures. These fragments of crinoids, remnants of a time when Lorraine was covered by a warm sea, still cover the paths on the hill today.
An incomparable panoramic view
The Sion-Vaudémont hill is also renowned for its exceptional panoramic views. On a clear day, it is possible to see more than 85 villages with the naked eye, as well as the Vosges ridges in the distance. This panorama makes the hill a great place for family walks, hikes, or just a moment to relax.
A medieval village with a glorious past
At the end of the hill is the medieval village of Vaudémont, cradle of the dynasty of the Counts of Vaudémont. This family gave Lorraine its last dukes, and left its mark on European history through its links with the House of Habsburg-Lorraine. The village, with its historic remains, is a must-see stop on your visit.
