Built after the defeat of 1871, the Fort de Villey-le-Sec is part of the entrenched camp of Toul, one of the most important strongholds in France at the time. The fort is an important illustration of the defensive system devised by General Séré de Rivières, designed to protect the French borders against a new invasion. What makes the Fort de Villey-le-Sec unique is that it is the only example in France where an entire village was completely encircled by a fortified wall. This site, which has remained intact, is a precious testimony to the military engineering of the late 19th century.

Discover the Fort de Villey-le-Sec on a guided tour that will plunge you into the history of French defence. On the programme, explore the different parts of the fort, including the northern battery and the réduit, which offer breathtaking views of the Côtes de Toul and the Woëvre.
One of the highlights of the visit is undoubtedly the ride on the narrow-gauge train, which takes you on a 1,500-metre circuit around the fort. This mode of transport, which is as much fun as it is historical, allows you to discover the site in an immersive way, as in the days when soldiers travelled around the fort by train.
Within the fort, you will be impressed by the massive masonry walls that bear witness to the skills of the workers of the time. The perfectly preserved underground galleries, casemates and powder magazines plunge you into the atmosphere of the 19th century, when the threat of a new confrontation was omnipresent.

In addition to its historical interest, the Fort de Villey-le-Sec is also a place where nature is reclaiming its rights. The association La Citadelle, in charge of preserving the site, has set up an original ecological management project. Highland cattle, adapted to the maintenance of difficult terrain, graze on the 20 hectares of the site, helping to preserve this exceptional environment.
This environmentally-friendly approach adds an extra dimension to the visit, making the Fort of Villey-le-Sec not only a major historical site, but also an example of sustainable heritage management.
