Vigneulles-lès-Hattonchâtel: Nature, History and Heritage in the Meuse

Built on the foundations of an ancient fortress dating back to the 9th century, Hattonchâtel takes its name from Hatton, Bishop of Verdun, who played a key role in its fortification. This historic village has seen the passage of centuries, from medieval times to post-First World War reconstruction, thanks in particular to the invaluable help of an American benefactress, Miss Belle Skinner. Today, this commune, born of the merger of several villages, is a living witness to its rich past.

Wandering through its streets, you can admire old houses, such as the Maison à la Voûte (12th and 14th century), the 14th-century cloister, and the imposing church of Saint-Maur, famous for its stained-glass windows created by master stained-glass artist Jacques Grüber. The Gothic altarpiece by the renowned sculptor Ligier Richier is a masterpiece of local heritage.

Hattonchâtel castle: a breathtaking view

Perched 400 metres above sea level, the Château d'Hattonchâtel dominates the region with its breathtaking views. Built in the 9th century for the Bishop of Verdun, this monument has stood the test of time, undergoing numerous alterations before being restored in the 1920s by Miss Skinner, after the destruction of the War. Today, the château, with its original features such as the western moat and part of the northern wall, offers a striking panoramic view of the Woëvre plain and the Meuse coastline. A not-to-be-missed visit for lovers of history and beautiful landscapes.
