A village marked by war

Before 1916, Fleury-devant-Douaumont was a prosperous little village. However, the First World War, and more specifically the Battle of Verdun, changed its destiny forever. As soon as the German offensive began in February 1916, the village was evacuated, then completely destroyed by incessant bombardment. It became the focus of fierce fighting, changing hands 16 times between the French and German forces. Today, Fleury-devant-Douaumont has become a symbol of sacrifice and remembrance, a place where visitors can honour those who fell for freedom.

To see at Fleury-devant-Douaumont

Although the village was never rebuilt, today there are several places of remembrance to discover. The Notre-Dame de l'Europe chapel, built in 1934 on the site of the former church, is a tribute to the departed inhabitants and a symbol of peace. Its stained glass windows, by the artist Grüber, are dedicated to the soldiers who fought here. Just a stone's throw from the chapel, the Verdun Memorial, inaugurated in 1967, tells the story of this historic battle and is a must-see if you want to understand the importance of this scarred land.
Walking through Fleury, you can also discover the paths and markers that mark the former streets and houses of the destroyed village, offering a poignant and immersive experience. The Poudrière discovery trail, as well as the botanical trail linking the Memorial to the destroyed village, allow you to soak up the unique atmosphere of this place.
